Environmental and safety education is a combination of safety education and environmental education. Safety is everybody’s business. It includes both children, adolescent and adult. It is the freedom from injury, danger or loss. Health is a complete state of physical, mental and social wellbeing not merely the absence of diseases or infirmity (WHO 1946). Health is simply the general condition of the body or mind. The term environment connotes the physical and biological factors along with their chemical interactions that affect an organism. Health, Safety and environmental are inter connected as they each affect one another. Your environment will inevitably affect safety and health. “Health is wealth” and “Safety first” are expression that show the importance of being of being healthy and being safe. To maintain and increase learning environment, it is very important that students are healthy and are learning in a safe environment.

Environmental education is a learning process that increases people’s knowledge and awareness about the environment and associated challenges, develops the necessary skills and expertise to address the challenges, and fosters attitudes, motivations, and commitments to make informed decisions and take responsible action (UNESCO, Tbilisi Declaration, 1978).

Environmental Education (EE) is a process in which individuals gain awareness of their environment and acquire knowledge, skills, values, experiences, and also the determination, which will enable them to act individually and collectively to solve present and future environmental problems.

Environmental education is a complex process, covering not just events, but a strong underlying approach to society building as a whole. EE provides people with the awareness needed to build partnerships, understand NGOs activities, develop participatory approaches to urban planning, and ensure future markets for eco-business.

Environmental education enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and effective decision-making skills, and teaches individuals to weigh various sides of an environmental issue to make informed and responsible decisions. Environmental education does not advocate a particular viewpoint or course of action.

The components of environmental education are:

1. Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges

2. Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental challenges

3. Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental quality

4. Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges

Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges

Safety can be regarded as a state of being safe from risk of accident injuries, physical or psychological (Achalu, 2000). Safety education is that type of experience through which people learn to make wise choices when the possibility of injury to one’s self or other is involved. Safety education is primarily for the development of knowledge, skill s, habits and attitudes necessary to prevent death and injuries. It is not possible to eliminate all potential hazardous conditions or totally avoided. Hence, safety safe living demands ability to function at optimum level in the presence of hazards.  It is therefore important that safety attributes be developed in children, adults, in work places, roads and school environment.

Objectives of Safety Education

To teach children to read and understand and obey safety rules and regulations.

To develop awareness on the impact of accident in the community.

To develop an understanding of responsibility of prevention and control of accident by all.

To help children recognize situations involving hazards.

To make one understand the individual role in accident prevention.

To develop habits of carefulness and obedience to safety rules at home on the streets, in school or at work places.

To teach children safety conducts in the use of street vehicles, private automobiles and buses.
